A number of different approaches have been made to work around the problems with the critical materials, water and metal. One of these involves applying the transponder such that it is not flat but instead folded so that it projects out from the pallet like a flag. The mechanical stability is also good as the tags easily lie flat and then pop back up again and are thus less likely to be torn off.
